OK, I know it’s a bit syrupy, but for anyone who hasn’t seen this YouTube video of Christian The Lion, it is worth a look. And by the way, I don’t think most of the lions I was photographing recently in Africa would have greeted me quite this affectionately had I left the safari vehicle.

It’s sunset at Tarangire Safari Lodge in Tanzania, and the end of a rewarding day in Tarangire (pronounced Taa-raa-nghee-reh) National Park. Today, we watched giraffes, baboons, impalas, eagles, elephants, elephants and more elephants. The lodge is built on a high bluff overlooking the Tarangire River and plains below.

As luck would have it, on day one of our post-climb safari, we arrived at Tarangire National Park in Tanzania just as a baboon troop was beginning its karaoke hour. Pictured above is one of the troop’s more talented members attempting “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Day 7 of Kilimanjaro climb. We finished our Kilimanjaro adventure today. We went up the mountain on the Rongai route, and came down the Marangu route. The photo above is a picuture at trip’s end near the Marangu Gate. It is everybody in our group that climbed the mountain and all the guides, porters, cooks, and others that made it all such a wonderful, rewarding experience. We head back to Arusha for the night and then leave tomorrow morning for a three-day safari in Tarangire Park, Lake Manyara Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 6 of Kilimanjaro climb. I made it to the top of Kilimanjaro at 6:00 AM after a 6 1/2 hour climb from Kibo Hut. Dawn was just starting to break. It was very cold and windy at the top. I’d estimate there was a -40 degree windchill. All the people in our group made it which was really great! We didn’t stay around the top too long because of the cold, but the rising sun and a clear sky made the view spectacular.

Almost Day 6 of Kilimanjaro climb. Up at 10:30 PM to get ready for our push to the summit. The photo above is what it looked like outside. A bright, nearly-full moon was illuminating the landscape. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful scene to start our ascent.

Day 4 of Kilimanjaro climb. Our group stayed at Mawenzi Tarn today to help with acclimatization. We climbed a high ridge below Kilimanjaro’s Mawenzi Peak. We took this group photo on that ridge at an elevation of about 15,000’.

Day 2 of Kilimanjaro climb. On day two, clouds hang low over our camp at Kikelewa Caves (10,990’), but the sun shines brightly on the plains of Kenya below.
