It’s sunset at Tarangire Safari Lodge in Tanzania, and the end of a rewarding day in Tarangire (pronounced Taa-raa-nghee-reh) National Park. Today, we watched giraffes, baboons, impalas, eagles, elephants, elephants and more elephants. The lodge is built on a high bluff overlooking the Tarangire River and plains below.

As luck would have it, on day one of our post-climb safari, we arrived at Tarangire National Park in Tanzania just as a baboon troop was beginning its karaoke hour. Pictured above is one of the troop’s more talented members attempting “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Lion chase 3/3. The lion catches the small wildebeest calf. You can see the wildebeest standing in the lion’s shadow. There is a happy ending. After standing there for about 15 seconds, the wildebeest calf trotted off and the lion let it go. Apparently, the lion concluded the calf was too small to eat or was not in the mood for wildebeest dim sum.

A view from the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater into its Eden-like interior. We didn’t go down into the crater on the way to The Serengeti, but we planned on coming back on Feb. 17th after the climb of Kilimanjaro to do just that.
